Thailand's industrial output rises

Thailand's industrial output rose for a fourth straight month in June but just marginally and recovery remains fragile as exports and domestic demand remain weak.

The Industry Ministry said on Thursday its manufacturing production index (MPI) in June rose 0.8 per cent from a year earlier. A Reuters poll had forecast a rise of 2.0 per cent.

In May, output rose a revised 2.7 per cent from a year earlier, instead of the 2.6 per cent reported earlier.

Industrial goods accounted for 80 per cent of total exports in June, which fell 0.1 per cent from a year earlier, customs data showed.

June's annual output gain was led by autos, electronics, steel, textiles and food.

Capacity utilisation was 66.29 per cent in June, down from May's revised 67.54 per cent.

Exports have contracted in each of the past three years. The central bank has forecast shipments will fall 2.5 per cent this year, while it expects the economy to grow 3.1 per cent.

Japan to assist Thailand in becoming a manufacturing hub

Japan is set to collaborate with Thailand in building up the Kingdom as a manufacturing hub for pickup trucks, hybrids and electric vehicles, the report said.

The partnership was hatched following Thai PM Prayut Chan-o-cha’s visit to Japan earlier this year. After his visit, General Prayut authorised the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) to work closely on joint development with the Japan External Trade Organization (Jetro) office in Bangkok. Both parties have since organised seven meetings with Japanese companies in Thailand.

Progress has now been made beyond talks – a record of discussions (RD) was signed earlier this week between the NESDB and the Science and Technology Ministry with Jetro. The NESDB is set to propose the details of the RD to a meeting of the National Innovation Development Committee, which is chaired by General Prayut.

According to NESDB’s secretary-general, Arkhom Termpitayapaisith, Japanese companies are willing to promote Thailand as a production hub for one-tonne pickup trucks, hybrids and electric cars if the Thai government was willing to waive import tariffs and excise tax on imported car prototypes and auto parts that had yet to be made in Thailand, the report said.

He added that Japanese firms also suggested that Thailand begin development of automotive testing centres for crash, high-speed, wind-tunnel, durability and emissions tests. Executives of Japanese firms with regional headquarters in Singapore have reportedly given their full support for the joint development. Currently, Japan is the top foreign investor in Thailand – its investment in the first-half of 2015 amounted to 87.8 billion baht (RM10.5 billion)

Xiaomi enter into Thailand

China's Xiaomi has picked Thailand as the launch country for the company's smartphones in fast-growing Southeast Asia. The move by the handset giant is aimed at establishing a footprint in the region, said Sirichai Larbmahanond, channel operation account director at Brightstar Thailand, the local arm of US-based wireless distributor Brightstar Corporation.

Brightstar has been named the authorised dealer of Xiaomi's Mi4 phone in Thailand. Mr Sirichai said that Xiaomi sees Thailand as a high-potential growth market for smartphones sold through retail channels. Xiaomi normally sells phones online; the company makes Android-based handsets that look similar to Apple's iPhone. Xiaomi will officially launch the Mi4 for pre-order at Thailand Mobile Expo 2015, running today through Sunday at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

The Android-based Mi4 features a five-inch display with 3 GB of RAM, 13-megapixel camera, quad-core 2.5-gigahertz processor and 3080 mAh battery.
Mr Sirichai said that Xiaomi phones will arrive in Thailand this month and are now in the process of getting permission from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission.

The Xiaomi Mi4, which is priced at 10,990 baht, is designed with longer battery life to serve heavy users. Brightstar plans a joint marketing strategy with mobile operators, e-commerce providers and IT retailers.

Nutchanon Boonsorn, an associate market analyst at IDC Thailand, said the arrival of Xiaomi would likely spark fierce competition in the local handset market, particularly among Chinese brands.

Chinese handset makers Huawei, Lenovo, Alcatel, Oppo, Vivo, Wiko and ZTE increased their market share last year, selling a combined 3 million handsets versus 1.5 million in 2013.

According to IDC, Xiaomi was the top smartphone company in China in 2014 with a 12.5% market share, narrowly outpacing South Korea's Samsung at 12.1%.

Opas Cherdpunt, managing director of M Vision, the organiser of Thailand Mobile Expo 2015, said weak consumer purchasing power resulting from sluggish economic conditions would be a key factor this year. We expect to maintain total sales revenue of 1.5 billion baht this year. M Vision spent 20 million baht on a distribution website, www.s-estore.com, to give customers an online marketplace for high-end smartphones.IT retail shops usually don't display low-selling high-end phones in provincial markets. M Vision estimates that at least 5% of Thailand's smartphone users have no access to high-end models.
